The Smartphone Chronicles: In Every Laugh, There’s a Little Truth

When we created The Smartphone Chronicles, the idea was simple: have a little fun with an industry we know very well.
The series became a popular and funny way to look at some of the things we’ve all come to accept about smartphone protection — even when they don’t make a lot of sense.
Because in every laugh, there’s usually a little truth.
Smartphones have transformed dramatically. They’ve become smarter, more personal and more valuable. They understand how we use them, where we go and what matters to us.
But the way we protect them?
In many ways, it still feels like it’s stuck in the 90s.
Across seven episodes, The Smartphone Chronicles takes a humorous look at what happens when an old protection model meets a much smarter world.
Lost in the 90s
The idea: Our phones have evolved. Why hasn’t phone protection?
Imagine bringing today’s smartphone technology back to the 1990s. It would seem almost unbelievable.
Yet many of the basic ideas behind phone protection would feel surprisingly familiar.
Lost in the 90s pokes fun at an industry that has watched the technology it protects race forward while many of its own approaches have remained largely unchanged.
Dogventures
The idea: We’re all different. Why should we all be priced the same?
Some people are careful with their devices. Others… not so much.
Dogventures uses a little canine chaos to make a bigger point: individual behavior matters.
When technology can increasingly understand differences in risk, treating everyone exactly the same starts to look a little strange.
Protection can become more personalized — including how customers are priced and rewarded.
Couples Therapy
The idea: Protection shouldn’t be a relationship you forget you’re in.
“Do you even remember why we’re together?”
It’s a funny question in couples therapy. It’s also surprisingly relevant to phone protection.
Many customers sign up and then barely think about their protection again — until something goes wrong.
Couples Therapy asks what happens when protection becomes something customers actually remember, understand and value.
The opportunity isn’t just to protect the phone. It’s to build an ongoing relationship with the customer.
First Contact
The idea: Try explaining today’s phone insurance to someone who’s never heard of it.
Sometimes the easiest way to see how strange something has become is to explain it to an outsider.
First Contact takes some of the conventions of traditional phone insurance and looks at them with fresh eyes.
Same pricing regardless of behavior. Limited engagement. Little personalization.
When you remove “that’s just how it’s always been done” from the equation, some of those assumptions start sounding pretty outdated.
Fortune Teller
The idea: Is pricing really fair if we already know everyone isn’t the same risk?
Predicting the future used to require a crystal ball.
Today, data can tell us quite a lot.
Fortune Teller has some fun with the idea of predicting risk while asking a serious question about fairness.
If two customers have very different risk profiles, should they always receive exactly the same offer?
Better intelligence creates an opportunity for fairer pricing, smarter incentives and protection that better reflects the individual customer.
Stuck in the 90s
The idea: Some things from the 90s are worth keeping. Others aren’t.
The music? Absolutely.
The fashion? Debatable.
A one-size-fits-all approach to smartphone protection? Probably not.
Stuck in the 90s returns to one of the central themes of the series: the device has changed enormously, but the protection model hasn’t always kept pace.
It’s time for protection to become as intelligent as the technology it protects.
The Wrong Meeting
The idea: Do customers actually like their phone protection?
It’s an uncomfortable question — which makes it perfect for The Wrong Meeting.
Protection can deliver enormous value when something goes wrong. But that doesn’t necessarily mean customers feel connected to the product the rest of the time.
What if protection gave customers reasons to like it before they had a claim?
Rewards. Personalized value. Better engagement. Predicted trade-in. Benefits that customers can actually see.
Protection shouldn’t just be something customers pay for.
It should be something they’re happy to have.
The Joke Is Funny. The Opportunity Is Serious.
Across all seven episodes, the Smartphone Chronicles keeps coming back to the same idea:
Smartphones became intelligent. Protection should too.
Risk intelligence can create a fundamentally different relationship between customers and protection providers.
Instead of one-size-fits-all pricing, we can personalize.
Instead of disappearing after the sale, we can engage.
Instead of waiting for a claim to demonstrate value, we can reward.
Instead of thinking only about today’s device, we can help customers understand tomorrow’s trade-in value.
And instead of accepting that phone protection has to work the way it always has, we can build something better.
We hope you enjoyed The Smartphone Chronicles.
We certainly had fun making them.
And if a few of the jokes felt a little too familiar…
Well, in every laugh, there’s a little truth.
